Hong Kong Secretary for Justice Leads Delegation to Attend “Resolve2Win – Legal Services of Hong Kong, Opportunities for All” Conference in Shenzhen

On 7th August, the Secretary for Justice of Hong Kong, Mr Paul Lam, SC, led a delegation of around 20 representatives from the Hong Kong Bar Association, the Law Society of Hong Kong, related sectors  and Mr Nick Chan, BBS, MH, JP, the Director of AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre (AALCO-HKRAC) attended and supported the “Resolve2Win – Legal Services of Hong Kong, Opportunities for All” conference in Shenzhen. The conference, themed “Synergistic Development with Hong Kong to Go Global”, was co-organised by the Department of Justice and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council to promote Hong Kong’s legal and dispute resolution services, over 300 representatives from the legal, business and other sectors attended the conference.

The Second Panel Discussion Explores Opportunities and Legal Risks From Emerging Tech Amid Digital Transformation

The second panel discussion session focused on the opportunities and potential legal risks arising from the development of emerging technologies amid the broader trend of digital transformation. This session was moderated by Mr. Nick Chan AALCO-HKRAC, the panel featured distinguished legal professionals from Hong Kong, who provided insights on the latest Lawtech services and innovations available in the city. They highlighted how Hong Kong, as an international financial and commercial hub, is at the forefront of leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of legal services.

One of the key topics discussed was the growing application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in the legal industry. Panellists explained how AI-powered tools can automate repetitive tasks, assist with legal research and analysis, and even aid in the drafting of legal documents. This has the potential to significantly boost productivity and reduce costs for both legal practitioners and their clients.

The panel also delved into the use of blockchain technology in areas such as smart contracts and digital asset management. They explored how these distributed ledger solutions can bring greater transparency, security and efficiency to various legal and commercial transactions.

Moreover, the representatives from Hong Kong shared updates on the development of online dispute resolution (ODR) platforms. These innovative tools leverage digital channels to facilitate the mediation and arbitration of cross-border disputes, making the dispute resolution process more convenient and cost-effective for parties involved.

Alongside the discussion of these technological advancements, the panellists also highlighted the importance of establishing robust regulatory frameworks and ethical guidelines to address the potential legal challenges posed by emerging technologies. Issues such as data privacy, cybersecurity, and the legal validity of digital evidence were among the key concerns raised.

By sharing their expertise and insights, Mr. Nick Chan summed up the Hong Kong legal professionals demonstrated the city’s leading role in adopting Lawtech solutions and ensuring the smooth integration of technology into the delivery of legal services. This aligns with Hong Kong’s vision to become a premier international legal and dispute resolution hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
