The global sports market is projected to top US$680 billion by 2028. The Chief Executive in his policy address paragraph 74 mentioned that “Hong Kong will explore establishing a sports dispute resolution system and promote sports arbitration, leveraging the institutional advantages of Hong Kong in dispute resolution”.
On 6 November 2024, with speakers the Hon Kenneth Fok, JP, Vice-President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, Mr Hew Yang-Wahn, Chairperson of the Sports Law Committee of Hong Kong Bar Association and Mr Ronald Sum, JP, Council member and Chairman of Sports Law Committee of The Law Society of Hong Kong, Mr Nick Chan, Director of AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre, was invited to be the moderator of a Fireside Chat, “Experience Sharing of Resolving Sports Disputes”, held during the Hong Kong Legal Week 2024.
During the discussion, all speakers agreed that Hong Kong has the potential to become the leading international sports dispute resolution services hub in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. The Hon Kenneth Fok, also mentioned that the Hong Kong Olympic Academy will co-organize with the AALCO-HKRAC to launch the AALCO Sports Mediation Training Programme designed for dispute resolvers of all levels, athletes, members and staff of sport associations, teachers, students, and lovers of sports and peaceful resolution of disputes in the sports and wider community, who seek to apply for empanelment on our Sports Dispute Resolution Panel.
