On 24 October 2024, Mr Nick Chan, Director of AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre, along with the AALCO Hong Kong delegation met with the Solicitor General and other representatives from the Ministry of Justice of South Africa. South Africa and Hong Kong are both common law jurisdictions. The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to deepen their understanding of each other’s constitutions, legal systems, and foreign investment laws.

The AALCO Hong Kong delegation was warmly hosted by the Chinese Embassy in South Africa. Minister Zheng Bing shared the view of deepening cooperation between Hong Kong, mainland China, and South Africa in legal services, international arbitration, and economic collaboration. During the meeting, Mr Nick Chan, Director of AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre, highlighted Hong Kong’s role as a legal hub under the “Belt and Road” initiative.

The AALCO Hong Kong delegation also met with Mr. Mtho Xulu, President of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) and his team. This marked SACCI’s first encounter with a delegation from Hong Kong, aiming to foster substantial cooperation between South Africa and Hong Kong in economic and trade realms. SACCI is actively considering a return visit to Hong Kong next year and participation in the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce’s 165th-anniversary celebrations.
